Maryland listed former Saginaw nuns on terrorist watch list; now sisters demand their files
by LaNia Coleman | The Saginaw News
Monday October 13, 2008, 8:55 AMDominican nuns and former Saginaw residents Sister Ardeth Platte and Sister Carol Gilbert are among 53 activists labeled as terrorists.
Platte, a former Saginaw City Council member, and Gilbert reportedly presented a speech entitled “In a Time of Moral Crisis, We Could Not Be Silent” at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids on Thursday, the day before The Washington (D.C.) Times reported that a classified Maryland State Police file branded them as terrorists.

“The Dominican nuns broke into a US nuclear missile silo in Colorado in 2002 and painted crucifixes with their own blood — earning Platte and Gilbert prison sentences of 41 and 33 months respectively.” (http://heidilore.wordpress.com/2008/10/12/us-nuns-come-home-to-discover-terrorist-status/) I can imagine they would wind up on a list! The fact that they’re nuns only makes it ‘newsworthy.’
“If they can label us as terrorists, they can label all kinds of people as terrorists,” (Sister Carol) Gilbert said. “So then people become afraid to speak out against what the established government might be saying — and that is the demise of democracy.” (same link)
They certainly are “badass” but deserved their labeling, just as the Jesuits that jump the fence at the School of the Americas in Georgia, the US School of Dictatorship. To be ‘upset’ at their labeling, though, goes a bit far. Surely they’re not *that* ignorant. But then again … perhaps they are. Wearing a habit shouldn’t give anyone a walk if they break the law. Their self-righteousness sounds a bit narcissistic to this former Catholic boy.

Oh agreed – - The whole thing is so stupid, but no one should be “shocked.” These terror watch lists are done by computer, not living, breathing, thinking people who might go “Nuns? WTF?” They should petition to get off the list anyway, IMHO.
